Asian eyelid surgery, also known as double eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure which can dramatically improve the aesthetics of those eyelids which are characterized as “single eyelids”. The name of Asian eyelid surgery refers to the unique eye morphology of the Asian descent people, including Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, or Southeast Asian. The Asian eyes can also be described as the Mongoloid eyes or the Oriental eyes. Asian eyes rarely have a crease because the muscles which open the eyelids and move the eyes up are connected lower than in Western eyes. In addition to that, Asian eyes have more fat tissue which results in a puffier appearance of the eyes.
Asian eyelid surgery helps to get rid of the sleepy or sad looking appearance which is usually caused by the droopy upper eyelids. In some cases the skin around the eyes can also worsen side vision which can become a burden in everyday life, especially for those who drive. Fortunately, Asian eyelid surgery can not only improve one’s appearance, ease putting on make-up, but also improve peripheral vision.
During Asian eyelid surgery a surgeon removes excess skin from the upper lid creating a fold (also known as a “double eyelid”) which makes the eyes look bigger and more awake. The surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia.
Why is Asian eyelid surgery so popular?
Historically Asian eyelid surgery started to gain more popularity because of the increasing desire to acquire more Western features. However, nowadays the increasingly growing demand for such surgery may be due to the larger incomes, increased social acceptance for such visual changes, and beauty standards which favor a wide and bright eye look. Moreover, the surgery itself lasts only 60 to 90 minutes and it does not necessarily require general anaesthesia. Recovery is relatively uncomplicated and the results can last a lifetime.
Who is an eligible candidate for Asian eyelid surgery?
An ideal candidate should wish to improve their natural appearance with a permanent, natural-looking eyelid crease. Having realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery is also crucial. Double eyelid surgery may not be in favor for those who want to have Western eyes and change their natural appearance completely. In cases of a significant brow sagging, bulging eyes, blood clotting disorders, and “dry eye symptoms” double eyelid surgery may not be recommended.
What to expect after Asian eyelid surgery
Preparing for the surgery
Firstly, a prospective patient should schedule the first consultation with a plastic surgeon. During the consultation the patient and the surgeon will set the goals that will satisfy both.
Тhe doctor will thoroughly evaluate the patient’s medical history and will help to make a detailed treatment plan that best fits the patient’s needs. The photos of the eyes will also be taken prior to the eyelid surgery.
Two months before and after the surgery patients should avoid alcohol and tobacco consumption.
One shall not use certain medication (ibuprofen, warfarin, clopidogrel, or aspirin) at least 10 days prior to the procedure since these substances increase the risk of blood clotting and might impair the healing process.
A balanced diet is important for the quality of the skin and collagen synthesis, therefore, consuming enough proteins, vitamins (C, A, and E), and minerals, such as zinc, is crucial for a faster recovery.
Someone should assist the patient for at least 24-48 hours after eyelid surgery. Also, it is essential to stock up with easy to make meals and snacks at home so that there is one less thing to worry about during the recovery. Ice packs are very effective at reducing swelling and pain, therefore, having those at hand is essential too. The patient should also find a pair of well-fitting sunglasses which could be worn in the direct sun when recovering. Eating or drinking is forbidden 6 hours before the surgery. It is best to choose loose-fitting clothes and button-up shirts so that it is easy to change outfits before going home.
Recovering after Asian eyelid surgery
Right after the surgery the eyes will be swollen. They might be watery, itchy, and bruised. Dryness and irritation might be caused by the eyelids failing to close down completely. If this is the case, the patient should inform the doctor and expect to have eye drops prescribed to keep the eyes moist. Vision may not be so clear for a few days. Eyelids should not be rubbed or irritated in any way.
If dissolvable stitches were used, they will dissolve on their own. If not, the doctor will remove the stitches 5 days after the surgery.
The patient may shower and wash their hair the next day after the surgery. Any cosmetics, including shampoo, face cream, soap, or hair spray, should be kept out of the incision sites.
Bruising and swelling will be present for up to 3-6 weeks, however, many patients feel ready to return to work in 2 weeks. The patients may expect to fully recover in approximately 1-3 months following the surgery.
Wound dressing will need to be changed as often as the doctor recommends. The patient should make sure to get enough sleep, rest as much as possible, and avoid housework, including dusting and gardening, for at least 2 weeks. When laying down, the head should be tilted up to reduce swelling. Anti-inflammatory drugs will be prescribed to help control post-operative pain. Ice compresses can help to alleviate the pain too. It is recommended to limit reading and screen time (TV, computer, and tablet). Strenuous activities, including sex, biking, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercises, should be avoided for at least 3 weeks. Patients are recommended to get back to driving the doctor’s permission. Eye make-up, as well as contact lenses, should not be used for at least 4 weeks. The patient has to wear sunglasses when in the sun for the first year following the surgery.
What are the possible risks?
As in any other surgical procedure, Asian eyelid surgery does not come without any possible risks. Some people can be more susceptible to certain complications than others, therefore, during a consultation the doctor thoroughly evaluates each case and then clearly explains to the patient what risks may apply to them individually. The possible risks of the Asian eyelid surgery include eye infection, dry or irritated eyes, eyelids failing to close down completely, skin discoloration, or noticeable scarring. Other, fortunately, more rare risks are associated with the use of anaesthetics and surgery in general, for example, prolonged bedtime may result in blood clot formation.
