Intimate surgery, also known as aesthetic genital surgery, is quite a new field of plastic surgery. Although widely discussed in the popular press, it is still a taboo subject for many people. The goal of this surgery is to increase self-confidence and quality of life by changing the intimate appearance. Here we present some of the intimate surgery procedures you might be interested in.
Intimate surgeries are getting more common as they not only improve the aesthetics of an intimate area and allow women to feel more comfortable and self-confident, but also may solve medical issues as well. There are several types of external female genital cosmetic surgeries, mainly mons pubis reduction, labiaplasty, labia majora augmentation with fat transfer, and clitoral hood reduction. Genital cosmetic surgeries are performed by highly experienced plastic surgeons.
Mons pubis is located above the pubic bone. It is like a soft cushion that is meant to protect the underlying bone. However, some women feel their mons pubis is too big and subsequently, affects their self-esteem. Mons pubis reduction works by removing the fat through liposuction. Even though mons pubis reduction is more popular among women, men can have the surgery, too. Reducing the size of an enlarged mons pubis in men makes male genitalia appear more prominent. As for women, a smaller mons pubis allows feeling more comfortable when wearing tight-fitting clothes (e.g. leggings) or a bikini.
Labiaplasty is the most popular genital cosmetic surgery providing long-lasting results. Sometimes women find that their labia minora stick too much out of the labia majora. Excess skin can also make sexual activity or other sports uncomfortable. During labiaplasty, labia minora is trimmed to make it smaller and achieve symmetry. Labiaplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and takes less than 1 hour to complete.
Labia majora can be augmented by transferring the patient’s fat. This surgery eliminates saggy skin and restores youthfulness of the labia majora. Fat transfer procedure is relatively quick, taking up to 1 hour. The patient’s fat is extracted from the belly, thighs, or other areas. The fat is then purified and injected into labia majora.
A clitoral hood is supposed to cover and protect the clitoris form irritation and overstimulation. However, sometimes there is an excess of skin covering the clitoris which reduces sexual pleasure. Clitoral hood reduction is aimed to remove excess skin and expose the clitoris, making it much more sensitive.
Internal female genital surgery is designed to improve and restore soft tissues, such as in hymenoplasty, or muscles (e.g. perineal repair). These surgeries are all performed by an experienced surgeon, and thus, our clinic can ensure the highest quality care and outcome for the patient. There are several types of internal female genital surgeries:
Vaginoplasty simply refers to tightening of the vagina. It is a reconstructive procedure, meaning that it aims to restore a vagina and pelvic floor muscles which usually become severely stretched and loose after natural delivery.
During delivery the perineum can tear and it is possible to fix it with a short surgical intervention. There are different tear degrees which are repaired using different techniques which will be discussed with an operating surgeon prior to the procedure. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately an hour to complete.
Urinary incontinence is a frustrating health problem to have. Fortunately, it can be resolved with urinary incontinence surgery. During this surgery, a synthetic sling is placed around the urethra to help close it, support and prevent leakage.
During the first consultation, you will meet an experienced surgeon to discuss your wishes and eligibility for surgery. The surgeon will thoroughly evaluate your health history, chronic illnesses, any previous genital surgery, age, and past deliveries.
Also, you will have to provide a list of all medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.
You should also inform your doctor about the status of your mental health status and any ongoing therapy. The doctor will explain an upcoming procedure in great detail and provide you with more information as to what to expect following the surgery. Even though discussing intimate body parts and sexual experiences can be quite uncomfortable, you should try to be as honest and open as you can. Our empathetic staff will take the best care of you.
It is highly important to start preparing early for your surgery since there are quite a few things to take care of before coming to our clinic. Firstly, you may have to undergo several health tests, including a blood test and a urine test. Especially for intimate surgery, you may be required to take a pregnancy test and vaginal smear test (it is needed to screen for any infectious diseases or tissue abnormalities).
You should quit smoking at least 2 months before and after the surgery because nicotine restricts blood flow, slows wound healing, and has other profound negative effects on the body.
The use of blood-thinning drugs, like aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, should be ceased 10 days prior to the surgery (or when your doctor tells you to do so). Bear in mind that your urine can be checked before the surgery to make sure you have not smoked or used prohibited medications.
Surgery should be planned between your menstrual cycles (it is best if you can schedule it right after your period) which allows you for enough recovery time before the beginning of the next cycle. You may also take pictures of your genitals so that you can discuss the outcome of the surgery later.
As there is less and less time left before the surgery, we recommend you purchase menstruation pads as they are needed during recovery and your next period. You should talk to your partner about avoiding sex for 6 weeks post-surgery and discuss other ways to stay intimate without having sex. Also, stock your fridge with easy-to-cook healthy meals or commercial microwavable dinners as it might be challenging to prepare food for yourself and your family right after the surgery.
You should shave your private areas a few days before the surgery. If you fail to do so, the medical team will have to shave the area beforehand to reduce infection risk. You may also be instructed to fast 6 hours before the surgery to prevent regurgitation during anaesthesia.
There is no doubt that problems of the genital area are not only physically but also mentally frustrating. Troublesome genital area affects physical health by causing pain during menstruation or sports, and eventually causes psychological challenges, like decreased self-esteem or depression. Besides, physically dissatisfying sexual intercourse may lead to personal frustration and subsequently have a negative effect on one’s relationships. Fortunately, minor surgical procedures can liberate every woman from functional problems and psychological discomfort.
As with every surgery, potential risks of intimate surgery should be known by every prospective patient. A few of the possible complications include bleeding, wound splitting, infection, scarring, or decrease in sensory perception. Bear in mind that our experienced surgeons will ensure the best care and keep complication risk to an absolute minimum.
