A reversed tummy tuck sometimes referred to as the reversed abdominoplasty, is a body contouring surgery that removes the shapeless skin of the upper abdomen to restore a youthful-looking appearance. A reversed tummy tuck is different from a regular tummy tuck because it is a smaller scale surgery that is designed to remove the skin and fat only from the upper portion of the belly. An advantage of a reverse tummy tuck is that it can be easily combined with other surgeries, like a breast lift or augmentation.
Who is a good reversed tummy tuck candidate?
When it comes to body contouring surgeries, reversed tummy tuck is an ideal surgery for patients who complain of saggy skin and fat above the navel. An ideal candidate would have a tight lower part of the abdomen but loose skin in the upper abdomen. A reversed tummy tuck is especially beneficial to women who wish to lengthen the torso and also add volume to the breasts because reversed tummy tuck can be easily combined with a breast lift, a breast augmentation, or a breast reduction. An ideal candidate should have realistic expectations on what goals the surgery can and cannot meet.
What is the difference between a regular tummy tuck and reversed tummy tuck?
There are three main surgeries developed to target different abdomen contouring goals: a tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck, and a reversed tummy tuck. During a consultation, a surgeon evaluates the particular case and offers the best surgical strategy.
A mini tummy tuck targets loose skin only in the lower abdomen (below the belly button). It requires an incision in the bikini line that is usually shorter than in a regular tummy tuck. After making an incision, the surgeon cuts out extra skin and pulls the remaining skin down to flatten the stomach. With a mini tummy tuck, there is no need to create a new belly button.
A reversed tummy tuck targets loose skin in the upper abdomen (above the belly button). It requires a continuous horizontal line incision below the breasts where a bra is worn. Once the incision is made, a surgeon pulls the skin up and shapes the upper abdomen. The breasts can be enhanced with the natural fat from the abdomen during the same surgery and there is no need for a new belly button.
What surgeries can be combined with a reversed tummy tuck?
Because of the nature and location of the incision, a tummy tuck can be easily combined with other aesthetic procedures during the same surgery. A lot of people choose to have a few surgeries done at once because it saves travel expenses and time. Patients frequently ask to combine a reverse tummy tuck with a breast lift, a breast augmentation, or a breast reduction. Other popular surgeries address the back (e.g., an upper back lift) to give an entire torso a sleek look. If the patient is a good candidate for the procedure, the number of combinations is practically unlimited, that is why we encourage to consult the plastic surgeon about the combination choice.
Preparing for the surgery
First comes a consultation with a plastic surgeon who evaluates the patient’s general health and arranges an individual treatment plan. During the visit, women who wish to get pregnant in the future should discuss the matter as pregnancy pulls and stretches the abdominal tissues and can undo the surgical results.
A week before surgery, patients are asked to get the necessary lab tests, including complete blood work, a urine test, and an ECG (Electrocardiogram).
Patients must stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery and after surgery.
Patients should stop taking certain medications, including blood clotting medicines (e.g., aspirin, warfarin) and pain killers (e.g., ibuprofen, acetaminophen). Patients should also avoid vitamin E and omega supplements as these also have blood-thinning properties.
It is a good idea to prepare for post-op care, for example, to stock up on easy-to-cook meals or ask someone for assistance and help at home.
How is a reversed tummy tuck performed?
A reverse tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia and takes between 2 and 4 hours to complete. A surgeon begins by making an incision below the breasts where it can be easily hidden under a bra. Once the incision is made, the surgeon tightens the muscles in the upper abdomen and proceeds to remove excess fat and skin. If the patient wishes to augment the breasts, the surgeon will use the extra skin and fat from the abdomen to add volume to the breasts. After the surgery is done, the surgeon closes the incision in the upper abdomen with dissolvable sutures and places a bandage over the operated areas.
Recovery after reversed tummy tuck
Recovery after a reversed tummy tuck takes between 1 and 2 weeks. For the first week post-op, patients have to wear a special surgical bandage. Moderate discomfort remains for about 1 week and for a comfortable recovery patients are prescribed to take pain medications, like naproxen or ibuprofen. It is completely normal to experience swelling, bruising, and pain, that subsides in about 10 to 14 days. Some patients report tingling or burning sensations that are normal and will gradually resolve over time. All strenuous activities should be postponed for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Patients can return to driving and a desk job as soon as 2 weeks post-op, while a return to manual jobs may take up to 6 weeks.
