What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Brazilian butt lift is a combination of liposuction and fat transplantation procedures performed during the same surgery, which improves the prominence of the silhouette. Firstly, surgeon removes fat tissue from the upper part of the back, arms, abdomen, thighs, flanks or other areas where excess fat tissue is present. Extracted fat is purified and specially prepared for later injection. After a few tiny incisions are made, the surgeon strategically transplants patient’s own fat with a cannula to certain parts of the buttocks, giving a more pronounced buttocks and greater contour of the figure.
Is the Brazilian Butt Lift a Safe Procedure?
As any other procedure, the brazilian butt lift has its own risks and possible complications, which include haematoma, seroma, and tissue irregularities.
Haematoma is a prevalent minor complication, which often occurs as a result of this procedure. It is not dangerous and will usually fade away within the first few weeks after surgery.
Seroma is a build-up of bodily fluids that accumulate in the areas around the ruptured minor vessels. Seromas are not dangerous and should resolve by themselves in a few weeks after the surgery. Rarely, seromas are of considerable size. If so, they might need to be drained by a clinician.
Tissue irregularities might result from uneven distribution of fat during liposuction or fat transplantation. A solution for most patients is lymphatic drainage massage therapy, which additionally helps with wound healing and seroma prevention.
Other rare side effects include sciatic pain, fat embolism, wound rupture, infection, and asymmetry. Note that choosing a well-established clinic and an experienced surgeon significantly reduces possible risks and complications.
Who is a Proper Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
How to prepare for the surgery?
To achieve the most satisfying results each patient should take a few things into consideration before proceeding with brazilian butt lift surgery.
Firstly, a prospective patient has to consult a health specialist and discuss, if surgery is the only possible way to treat the issue at hand and if there are any non-surgical methods that would satisfy the patient’s needs. Then schedule the surgery and begin preparing for it.
Before surgery patients are asked to undergo certain lab tests (blood work, urine test, ECG (electrocardiogram), X-rays, or others). Then a doctor will evaluate the patient’s health history and lab tests as well as discuss the surgery plan and expected results.
Note that patients are strongly advised to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption 6 weeks before and after the procedure. Those habits highly interfere with wound healing, prolong recovery and increase the risk of infection.
Health specialists also suggest patients maintain nutrient rich diet, drink enough water and exercise daily. Avoid fatty foods (steaks, fried foods and desserts) as they have a negative impact on the healing processes by increasing inflammation.
The patient might be asked to refrain from eating and drinking approximately 6 hours before the surgery. This is done in order to prevent regurgitation and vomiting during the procedure.
Recovering from a Brazilian Butt Lift
Right after surgery, a compression garment will be put on, while the areas where liposuction was performed will be covered with bandages. The compression garment is mainly required to prevent seroma formation and to ensure proper healing of the tissues.
Also, the patient might develop bruising or swelling at liposuction sites, these are expected to resolve within several weeks.
Incisions are kept minimal during the brazilian butt lift procedure, therefore, there should not be any visible scars after successful recovery.
A combination of certain medications like paracetamol and anti-inflammatory drugs will be prescribed to relieve pain, so that the patient experiences as little discomfort as possible.
Usually, patients can expect to get back to their usual routine within two days after surgery. However, it is crucial to avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for at least 6-8 weeks. Putting pressure on the operated areas might restrict blood flow, thus potentially killing transplanted fat cells. If sitting is an absolute necessity, the patient should use a doughnut-shaped pillow, so that the majority of the weight is distributed on the thighs.
As for sleeping, it is recommended to lie in a prone position (on the stomach) or on the sides for at least 8 weeks after surgery.
Similarly, the patient should avoid all kinds of high-intensity activities, including sexual intercourse, swimming, and driving. After the first month, the patient can start introducing fast-paced walks into the daily routine, while high-intensity training may be introduced after another 4 to 6 weeks.
What are the Upsides and Downsides of a Brazilian But Lift?

Brazilian Butt Lift vs. Buttocks Implants
A possible alternative to the brazilian butt lift is buttocks implants. Implants improve the shape and size of the buttocks, making them appear much larger and firmer than before. Implants might be a favorable option for patients who do not have enough body fat for harvesting and transplantation. Also, there is a wide range of implant sizes to choose from, as long as it is safe to perform the surgery.
However, there is a slight chance of implant rejection, which is characterized by immune cells ‘fighting’ the foreign object in the body. Implants can look rather unnatural after a while. Also, the incision needs to be large enough to fit the implant; therefore, scars might appear more visible.
With the brazilian butt lift, however, rejection is not possible, as the patient’s own fat tissue is used. Moreover, a brazilian butt lift is performed with a thin cannula, therefore just a few small incisions are made in order to transplant fat and they will likely be invisible when healed.
Both methods can result in complications like a seroma, infection or sciatic pain. In order to firmly conclude which method is more advantageous, each patient’s case requires to be assessed individually.
