What is Otoplasty? How does it work?
Otoplasty, or cosmetic ear surgery, is done to change the shape, size or position of the ear. This procedure is often performed when one’s ears are too protruding or are asymmetrical due to development issues, trauma or past surgeries. The main types of otoplasty are ear augmentation (for ears that are underdeveloped), otopexy (pinning back protruding ears) and ear reduction (reshaping and reducing the size of the ear). Otoplasty can take up to three hours – the duration of the procedure varies with each individual case. Incisions are made based on the correction needed and can be made either on the back surface or within the inner creases of the ear. During the surgery, the shape of the ear is changed by trimming and removing extra cartilage and skin. Additionally, the cartilage may be reshaped using stitches only. Otoplasty does not affect one’s hearing abilities.
Who is a proper candidate for ear surgery?
Preparation for surgery
During the consultation before otoplasty, you should be prepared to discuss your expectations and reasons for having the surgery.
Furthermore, your surgeon will review your medical history, examine your overall health and ask about any type of medications you take or may have taken in the past, including over – the – counter drugs and herbal supplements.
You will be asked to stop taking non – steroidal anti – inflammatory drugs well before surgery, as these types of medications can increase the risk of bleeding.
If you are a smoker, you will have to refrain from the habit well before the surgery as well, as smoking may interfere with the healing process.
Possible complications
Recovery after Otoplasty surgery
The ears are covered with bandages or dressings immediately after the procedure in order to provide support and keep the surgical wounds protected. It is imperative to keep the bandages on per your surgeon’s instructions – usually the bandages have to be worn for a few days and are then replaced with a supportive headband.
As it is completely normal to feel discomfort or pain post – surgery, your surgeon will prescribe painkillers for pain management. Additionally, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. Since the procedure is done under local anaesthesia, an overnight stay at the clinic is not required.
It is important to mention that you should avoid applying any type of abrasive force onto the bandaged areas (it is suggested to avoid physical contact sports for at least 3 months). It is often recommended to refrain from sleeping on the side as well.
There are two types of stitches that can be used for otoplasty – either dissolvable or non dissolvable. An additional appointment is needed for suture removal if non dissolvable stitches are used for closing the incisions.
Your ears may be mildly bruised for up to two weeks after otoplasty. However, the results are immediate, unlike with many other cosmetic procedures. Even though otoplasty leaves surgical scars, they are minor and are well hidden on the back surface or the inner creases of the ear.
We will advise you on travel arrangements including flights to and from Lithuania. We will take care of airport pick up and drop off and arrange a pleasant stay in a comfortable hotel at a convenient location. We will be there for you 24/7 if needed.
