What is a buccal fat removal surgery? How does it work and what is improved?
Buccal fat removal, or buccal lipectomy, is a surgical procedure done to make one’s cheeks appear slimmer and more contoured. The surgery focuses on removing buccal fat pads – fat deposits that are located under the cheekbones and behind the muscles of the face. Unlike regular fat tissue that is situated under the skin, buccal fat pads diminish with age. Nonetheless, some people, usually due to hereditary factors, possess buccal fat pads that are too large for their faces, especially in proportion to other fat deposits present in the body.
A buccal fat removal surgery is a fairly simple procedure which can take from 30 to 60 minutes depending on each individual case. It may be performed either under local or general anaesthesia. The incisions are made from the inside of the cheeks leaving no visible scars. Additionally, as the buccal fat pads are minimally connected to the structures around them, the removal itself is fairly simple. It is important to mention that the buccal fat pads are never fully removed, as it may result in a hollow appearance of the face.
Who is a proper candidate for buccal fat removal surgery and when is it needed?
Preparation for buccal fat removal (drugs, smoking, consultation)
A consultation with your plastic surgeon is necessary before the procedure. You should be prepared to discuss your expectations and the likely results of the procedure, including the possible risks. Additionally, your surgeon will evaluate your overall health, take photographs and recommend the best course of treatment for you.
What is more, you will be asked about any type of drugs you take or have taken (including over – the – counter medications and herbal supplements).
Besides that, you will have to provide information about your smoking habits and yours previous surgeries, if you had any.
Do not hesitate to ask any questions about the procedure and the preparation process. It is important to mention that in order to prepare for the surgery you will be asked to refrain from smoking for at least two weeks before the procedure and to avoid taking certain anti–inflammatory drugs (such as aspirin) and herbal supplements, which could increase the risk of bleeding.
Recovery after a buccal fat removal surgery
The recovery after a buccal fat removal surgery is easier when compared to recovery after many other cosmetic procedures. Nonetheless, an overnight stay at the clinic may be required if the procedure is done under general anaesthesia. Furthermore, you should expect a certain degree of swelling that can last up to a week. You may apply ice onto your cheeks to reduce the swelling. In addition, certain instructions are to be followed after buccal fat removal surgery, such as a liquid diet for a few days and using special mouth rinses in order to avoid infection at the incision sites. Your surgeon may prescribe additional medications (for decreasing the risk of infection or reducing pain) which can be taken or applied orally. Depending on your case, the surgeon might also recommend applying a bandage to add pressure to the buccal area. Finally, it should be noted that the results of buccal fat removal can take up to three months to fully appear, as your skin needs time to settle.
Special live presentation about facelift surgeries
Can buccal fat removal be combined with facelift or other surgeries?
Buccal lipectomy is frequently performed in combination with other facial surgical procedures, as the conjunction between two techniques may help achieve the desired look of a more natural and youthful face. Therefore, buccal fat removal may be performed along with:
Facelift – a procedure that reduces the signs of aging in the face and neck areas.
Middle facelift – this particular surgery tackles signs of aging in the lower eyelids and cheeks.
Blepharoplasty – also known as eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty is done to repair droopy eyelids.
A neck lift – this surgery may involve removing excess skin, muscle tissue or excess fat in order to improve the appearance of the neck.
Chin augmentation – a procedure done to reshape and enhance the appearance of the chin.
If you are considering combining any of these procedures, a consultation with your plastic surgeon is the best way to determine which combination will work best for you.
