What is a Brow lift?
As a result of being inevitably affected by the force of gravity, tissues of the forehead, eyelids and upper face develop laxity with time, permitting eyebrows to move downwards. As a person ages, normal and rather fragile attachments of the eyebrow to the skull bone right beneath it become attenuated. Droopy eyebrows, which is a visible outcome of eyebrow ptosis, may give the face a tired or even angry appearance. Moreover, excessively loose skin in the brow area can block one’s peripheral vision. In order to rejuvenate one’s looks and restore natural firmness of the skin in the forehead, a brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is an effective and minimally invasive surgical approach for instant and long-lasting results. As of today there are nine general types of eyebrow elevation procedures. However, the most prominent ones involve making incisions at the very top of the forehead behind the hairline and elevating the entire forehead and brows to a higher position. It is worth noting that the incisions are well-hidden in the hairline and usually no large removal of the skin is required.
Who is a proper candidate for a brow lift
As with all surgical procedures, an ideal candidate for a brow lift is usually the one who is in overall good health having as few comorbidities, such as overweight, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases etc. as possible. There are no major age restrictions when determining one’s eligibility for a brow lift, as all patients vary in their skin properties and facial features. However, as advantageous as brow lift may be, it is still a surgical procedure which involves irreversible skin excision, therefore it is extremely important for a candidate to objectively evaluate the necessity of the surgery and have realistic expectations about the results.
Preparation for face surgery
The success of brow lift partially depends on patient‘s determination to cooperate during the preparation period. Here are some major pre-surgery instructions that should be followed:
Practice healthy lifestyle. Exercising regularly, having your diet balanced and staying hydrated will strengthen your body for a faster recovery.
Avoid using tobacco products and consuming alcohol at least 6 weeks before and after the procedure as it may impair and delay tissue healing.
In order to prevent perioperative complications, taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and other blood thinners should be avoided, unless the operating doctor has advised otherwise.
Consult a plastic surgeon about your allergies, previous surgeries and daily medications. If you have any pre-existing conditions that require daily usage of medication, your operating doctor should be informed. Follow your specific pre-operative instructions as they may vary depending on your personal medical history.
Recovery after brow lift
Recovery after brow lifting surgery is usually fast and smooth. Here are some post-operative tips and information for a patient to know:
Initial wound healing usually takes up to 2 weeks. During that time it is not unusual to experience mild to moderate pain that should be managed with prescription medication.
A post-operative patient is discharged on the next day after the procedure, because it is usually done under general anesthesia.
It is required to keep the incision sites dry and clean up to 48 hours after the surgery. Later on patients are highly encouraged to maintain their personal hygiene routine or adjust it to the doctor‘s recommendations.
Bruising and swelling may be present for up to 2-4 weeks as a clinical manifestation of a local inflammatory response to a surgery. If it lingers on, a doctor should be consulted as it may be a symptom of a wound infection.
Brow lift scars are very subtle and in most post-operative patients they become undetectable a few months after the procedure. However, it is observed that in some patients the hairline tends to move up by about 1 cm after the procedure.
Patients are strongly discouraged from consuming alcohol and using tobacco products, especially while taking any kind of prescribed drugs after the surgery, for it may provoke undesirable side effects and complications may develop.
When brow lift is recommended with other surgeries, i.e. upper eyelid surgery or classical facelift?
For a brow lift to be successful and exhibit long-lasting results, condition and quality of one’s skin play an important role as brow lift alone may not be enough if the skin around patient’s eyes is wrinkled and the eyelids are notably saggy. In this case, upper eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, should be combined together with a brow lift. Moreover, for a more extensive rejuvenation, classical facelift may be performed together with a brow lift. However, the larger area of the soft tissues is exposed during the combined procedure, the greater risk of infection and a higher complication rate regarding wound healing may be observed.
What can the patient expect?
Brow lift is an extraordinarily beneficial low-risk procedure for those who are ready to make some changes in their looks though prefer to avoid drastic surgical interventions. Post-operative patients can immediately observe positive changes to their appearance and look more alert as the frown lines between the eyebrows and forehead creases disappear. Moreover, the eyebrows regain their natural shape and the trade-off scars become almost invisible in a few months after the procedure. All things considered, brow lift is a simple solution for a more youthful look and a happier self.
