The price difference is only due to considerably lower average salaries and taxes – which is the main reason for medical travel everywhere around the world.
What is upper back lift surgery?
Significant weight loss in a short period of time may create effects on the skin that are cosmetically and functionally unappealing. The overall upper back deformity, which includes laxity of the skin, excess body fat accumulation and redundant lateral breast tissue can be corrected with an upper back lift, also known as bra line back lift. Upper back lift is a consistent and reliable body contouring procedure, during which both the excess skin and subcutaneous fat from the upper back are removed in order to restore natural firmness of the skin and normal waistline definition. The procedure involves making two separate horizontal incisions across the back and excising the skin as well as excess adipose tissue in-between them. Incisions are made in the upper back area which is usually covered by bra straps, therefore, a subtle post-operative scar may be easily hidden, and it does not tend to move from its original position as the wound heals. All things considered, transverse upper body lift is a powerful tool that delivers consistent and safe results. It is beneficial for both normal weight and massive weight loss patients who have experienced weight fluctuations and subsequent skin laxity. Complications related to this procedure are rare and can usually be managed by wound care or minor revision.
Who is a proper candidate for this surgery? What are the indications?
How upper back lift is different from lower back lift?
Compared to lower back lift, also known as buttocks lift, upper body lift is a less radical procedure which involves removing extra tissue only from the upper-middle back. In contrast, lower back lift reshapes the patient’s outer thighs, buttocks, lower back as the incisions extend above the buttocks. Lower back lift is performed for a more profound restoration of the silhouette and is recommended for patients with notably droopy skin in both the buttock area and the lower back region. However, it requires prolonged recovery time and may be associated with a greater risk of perioperative complications and post-op wound infection.
Preparation for upper back lift
In order to properly prepare for upper back lift surgery, one should follow strict pre-operative instructions:
Recovery after upper back lift
A smooth and successful recovery after upper back lift takes time and patience.
General recovery takes up to 6-8 weeks. During that time one should refrain from strenuous activities involving upper body, e.g. forcefully abducting one’s arms etc., as it may put pressure on the incision sites.
Post-operative patients are expected to feel mild to moderate pain that may be managed with prescribed medications for up to 14 days.
It is required to keep the incision site dry and clean after the surgery. If the waterproof bandages are applied, patients are highly encouraged to maintain their personal hygiene routine on the day after the procedure or adjust it to the doctor‘s recommendations.
It is advised to wear compression garment 6-8 weeks after the surgery as it may help to significantly accelerate wound healing.
It is advised to avoid laying on one’s back up until the stitches and bandages are removed. For the first 3 weeks after the surgery patients should sleep on their side or stomach.
Upper back lift scar is distinctively noticeable only in the first few months after the surgery and slowly fades into a thin line later on. However, if necessary, an unlikely abnormal scarring may be fixed with an additional surgical procedure.
Bruising and swelling in the upper-middle back may be present for up to 4 weeks as an inflammatory response to a surgery. If it lingers on, a doctor should be consulted.
Can upper back lift be combined with other procedures?
Upper back lift may be performed together with liposuction for even more prominent results. In order to determine whether these procedures could be combined, one’s anatomical and physiological characteristics such as BMI etc. should be evaluated by a qualified plastic surgeon. It is worth noting that in order to avoid a greater risk of infection and a higher perioperative complication rate, upper back lift is not performed together with any other surgical procedures, f ex breast reduction or breast augmentation.
What to expect during perioperative period
When upper back lift is already performed, only a few more things should be taken care of for a smoother recovery:
It is absolutely normal to feel pain for up to 2 weeks after the procedure. It should be managed with prescribed medication depending on the pain intensity.
Patients are strongly discouraged from consuming alcohol and using tobacco products, especially while taking any kind of prescribed drugs after the surgery, as it may provoke some toxic side effects and complications may develop.
For the first 4 weeks after the surgery it is recommended to refrain from doing vigorous exercises. However, light physical activity has a significant positive effect on blood circulation and, therefore, induces tissue healing.
It is advised to wear loose fitting clothes they are easier to put on and take off.
